HOW TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY ON YOUR FUEL BILL

Sometimes we don’t pay as much attention as we should to the little things. But, a lot of little things/changes can help us make big savings if we put them into action. Here’s a list of little things that we’ve come up with that will help you reduce your fuel costs:

  1. Are you carrying or storing stuff in the boot of your car? If so, you are paying, in fuel, to carry that stuff around. If you can remove it and store it in your house or garage, you’ll save fuel costs.
  2. Keep an eye on your rev counter. Most modern cars are equipped with rev counters. The Energy Saving Trust, which provides advice on how to save money on energy costs, recommends that the most fuel efficient point to change gear is just before you reach 2,500 revs in a petrol car, and 2,000 in a diesel car. Therefore, keep an eye on your revs as change gear and it will help you save fuel.
  3. Close your windows. Often, I see drivers driving down the motorway at speeds of 60mph or more with their windows open. This causes a lot of drag on the car and means that fuel consumption goes up. Close your windows as much as possible when driving at faster speeds.
  4. Limit your shorter journeys. Did you know that it can take up to 5 miles for a car engine to be running at it’s most fuel efficient? This means that short journeys will always use more fuel. To save on fuel costs, try and limit the number of small journeys that you make.
  5. If you’re not using it, then store it. If you can, remove and store your roof rack or roof box at home when you are not using them. Leaving them on when you are not using them will cause additional ‘drag’ on your car and this will increase your fuel consumption.
  6. Check your tyres. I’ve mentioned this before. Soft or under-inflated tyres mean that you increase your car’s ‘rolling’ resistance. This, in turn, means that it takes more energy and, thus, fuel, to move your car. Check your tyre pressure regularly to make sure that they are at the right level.
  7. Be smooth. Finally, the more you try to drive as smoothly as possible, avoiding braking heavily or accelerating hard, the more money you will save on your fuel bill.

I hope that you found these tips helpful.
