The Mayor of London has revealed his intention to make London Europe’s ‘electric car capital’. Boris Johnson plans to have a network of 1300 charging points across the city, to be fully operational by 2013. The network, to be named Source London, is designed to create a visual identity for the collective of electric charge points. It will be available to motorists for an estimated £100 per year.
Mr Johnson said, “Already there are more electric drivers in London than anywhere else in the UK, but we are now entering an incredibly exciting period in electric motoring.” With petrol prices steadily increasing and the recent emphasis being put on reducing emissions, electric vehicles are presenting an attractive alternative to fuel motors. Transport for London is now trying to initiate charging points across the country, which will all be under the collective ‘Source’ branding.
Already, most leading manufacturers are designing hybrid or electric concepts, with cars such as the Toyota Prius and Honda CR-Z setting the benchmark for hybrids, and concepts like the Audi e-tron in the pipeline for production.
