Buying used cars

How many miles on a used car is too much?

As a general rule, 12,000-15,000 miles per year is considered average for most used cars. So, if the vehicle is five years old, it ideally wouldn’t have more than 75,000 miles on the clock. Check the overall condition and history of the vehicle with your dealer before purchasing too.

What documents do I need when I am buying a used car?

Before committing to a used car, ensure that you have seen the registration document (V5C), MOT certificate, and service and history documentation. Also check the VIN matches those on the paperwork. At McCarthy Cars, we make these checks on your behalf, and will be happy to share the documents with you before purchase.

Do I need to buy insurance before buying a used car?

If you have an insurance policy for your existing vehicle, this can usually be transferred to the new model. If, however, you are purchasing a first car, you may want to start your cover from a day or two before you pick the model up, so you can drive away from the dealer fully insured.

Is everything included in the price?

Buying from a reputable dealer such as McCarthy Cars means everything that should be with the car is present – from the handbook and spare keys to the spare wheel or repair kit. Feel free to check before driving away.

What should I look for when buying a used car?

There are several things you should look at when buying a used car, including the relevant paperwork and the condition of the car overall – both inside and out. You should also go for a test drive wherever possible to ascertain the mechanical integrity of the car.

Does the car have a current MOT?
