TEN TOP TIPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR

Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your car running at its best. A well-maintained car is safer, more fuel efficient and holds its re-sale value better. Here are ten things to look out for to make sure your car is always in the best possible condition.

1.TYRES

Good tyre health is fundamental to safe driving. Your tyre tread depth should be at least 1.6mm to comply with legal requirements, and you can measure this with a tread depth gauge. You can also make your tyres last longer by switching to winter tyres for the punishing colder months.

2.BRAKES

You should check your brake fluid level regularly and replace it often. It is also important to keep track of the condition of your brake pads and replace them when they have worn down.

3.SPARK PLUGS

You should check your spark plugs every 30,000 miles. You can do this yourself or bring your vehicle to the trained technicians at McCarthy Cars.

4.BATTERY

You should not have to replace your battery often, approximately every five years, but it is important to get it done properly. When you have your battery replaced, you have the option of upgrading to a technologically advanced battery which lasts longer and extends your car’s life.

5.FUEL FILTER

This frequently overlooked element of your engine is in constant use when the engine is running. It usually needs to be replaced every other year, and the technicians at McCarthy Cars will be able to assess the state of your fuel filter and replace it safely if necessary.

6.COOLANT

The coolant in your car’s radiator serves as antifreeze and protection against corrosion, as well as cooling the engine. You should check the level of coolant regularly, and ensure the ratio is half coolant, half water.

7.POWER STEERING FLUID

If your car has power steering, the system needs fluid to keep the operating system lubricated. You can check the level of power steering fluid easily by looking at the reservoir or dipstick, and if the level is often too low then there may be an underlying issue.

8.AIR FILTER

This component cleans the air coming into your engine and ensures it is free from contaminants that could damage your car. You should be checking your car’s air filter once a year to keep it performing at its best.

9.ENGINE BELTS

It is a good idea to keep an eye on your engine belt as if it gets worn down it can cause engine damage which is expensive to repair. Our technicians check your engine belt every time you bring it in for a service.

10.BODY PAINT

Having chip-free paint not only looks better, it also protects your car against corrosion. You should wash, wax and polish your car’s body paint regularly to provide extra protection.
