HOW TO EXTEND YOUR CAR’S LIFE

There are all kinds of ways to keep your car in better condition and prolong the lifespan of various components. Many of these are not widely known about, but they cost very little and can make a huge difference to how much you will need to pay in repair costs. Here are some of our favourite hints for extending the life of your car.

1. LIGHTEN THE LOAD

If you have many keys and keyrings attached to your car key, these can form a heavy load when your key is in the ignition. The added pressure can cause the ignition to wear out more quickly, leading the switch to break prematurely.

2. TAPE OVER THE CRACKS

If you get a crack in one of your headlights, tail lights or indicator lights, put clear tape over the broken section for protection. This is not a solution, but it stops water and dirt from getting in and making the problem worse until you can get your car to our service centre.

3. DON’T SCRIMP ON WASHER FLUID

It may be tempting to use water instead of washer fluid, but it is not as effective at cleaning your windscreen. Water can also freeze more easily in the engine, which can cause serious damage that is costly to repair.

4. CONDITION COLD AIR TOO

Running your car’s air conditioning system a few times over winter will keep it working properly. If you leave it too long without using it, the moving parts can seize up. Turning the air conditioning on in winter keeps it in good condition ready for the times you really need it in the summer months.
